Not only “Make a WISH”

Belgrade, August 2016
The humanitarian activities of the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Belgrade, despite the intense efforts aimed at this time at the project “Make a WISH”, haven’t forgotten on the many other social and hospital realities on which their energies have been devoted for years.

The Knights of children’s hearts

One may often read in the local media that “this Ambassador” of this powerful country puts down “this other one”, “that Ambassador” of another powerful country, “pushes that other one”. For one Ambassador one may hear that he is here to get the hand of St. John the Baptist and the Icon of Lady of Philerme… that Ambassador, Alberto di Luca, a representative of the Knights of Malta, has let us follow him for a few days and find out the truth about his work. The only thing he got was children’s smiles …

Our National Day: Humanitarian diplomacy and culture.

Belgrade, June 22nd
For the second year in a row the festivity of St. John the Baptist, Patron Saint of the Sovereign Order of Malta, was celebrated in a context of humanitarian diplomacy and culture.

While it is clear to all that our mission is in favor of those most in need in the world, particularly in the 120 countries where we are present, sometimes it is harder to remember that our nearly 1,000 years of history also include culture. And so, for the second consecutive year, in the picturesque setting of the National Theatre of Belgrade, was performed the famous opera of Giuseppe Verdi “Rigoletto”, masterfully interpreted by the baritone Alberto Gazale and soprano Elena Mosuc.

At the National Theatre, in the presence of 550 people and the institutional, religious, diplomatic and cultural authorities, the Ambassador Alberto di Luca has addressed

Emergency humanitarian assistance for refugees between Serbia and Hungary

Those who escape from the tragedies of war, persecution and hunger – forced, to survive, to abandon their lands and seek political asylum in another country – are always and unquestionably a humanitarian issue.
This is why the Sovereign Order of Malta, as evidenced by its millenary history – without ever considering the diversity of origins, religious faith and political orientation – is always present where the most acute is the need to help, to assist, to heal.
The “closure” of the border between Serbia and Hungary caused more serious problems and great difficulties for refugees from Syria and the surrounding areas for years ravaged by fierce fighting.
Following these sad developments, the flow of immigrants to the Europe Union will try to follow new routes and, for those who are already in Serbia, will attempt to enter via Croatia.
In spite of that, many refugees are still on the border between Serbia and Hungary.
The Order of Malta, since the beginning of this painful situation, is active in all areas involved thanks to the generous commitment of the Hungarian association and tireless leadership of the Ambassador in Budapest, the Archduke Michael von Habsburg Lothringen, that has sent, together with volunteers of the relief, vehicles as a first aid to those most in need.

Continues the collaboration between Monzino (Milan) and the hospital KBC Zvezdara (Belgrade)

Belgrade, September 10th 2015

Continues the collaboration between the only entirely cardiological hospital in Europe, the Monzino of Milan, and the University Medical Center Zvezdara of Belgrade.

A significant amount of beds and medical equipment has been in fact donated by Monzino to Zvezdara.

The official delivery has been made to the new Director, Prof. Dr. Petar Svorcan, by Ambassador Alberto di Luca and Dr. Carlo Buora, that in addition to playing the important role of First Counsellor is also the Chairman of Monzino.

Words of gratitude have been received by the vertices of the Serbian hospital together with the hope of a continuing collaboration with the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta.

Make a Wish to the Sovereign Order of Malta

Belgrade, September 9th 2015

On Tuesday, October 13th, will be held the ceremony of handover of the WISHES as conclusion of the charity project initiated in 2014 by the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Serbia
For logistical reasons, related to the distance between the various cities affected by the floods of May 2014, it was decided to split the ceremony between Sid and Ljig.
Of the approximately 3,500 letters written by elementary school children, and sent to our Embassy in Belgrade, about 1,500 have been selected for which the necessary founding has been found.
The two pillars of this generosity, that made possible the “delivery” of about 1,500 WISHES, were the success of the charity-dinner that took place, on June 19th, at the Twiga of Monte Carlo (see the article on other page of our website ) and the precious support of our friends from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taipei which, through the Taiwanese representative office in Hungary, confirmed two days ago to the Embassy the donation for 65 bicycles, 2 wheelchairs and 300 chairs and desks for young Serbian students.
We renew our fervent thanks to the tireless organizers of the event in the Principality of Monaco – HRH Prince Michael of Yugoslavia, Flavio Briatore and Luca Marzocco – and their distinguished guests, as well as to the Government of Taipei that, once again, proved its availability for solidarity and cooperation with the humanitarian activities of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
